Back To The Future: Best Practice, Best Outcome In Wound Care Management
SUFFERN, N.Y. (December 6, 2012) – Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center held their second annual system wide Wound Management Conference in November at the Sheraton Crossroads in Mahwah, NJ. The daylong conference was attended by 135 health-care providers who perform or refer patients for wound and management including physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals from inpatient and outpatient facilities, as well as short term or long term care facilities and home care settings. Nursing participants were awarded six contact hours upon completion of the program while physicians were awarded eight credits, AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
The theme for this year’s symposium was “Back To The Future: Best Practice, Best Outcome In Wound Care Management”. This theme was echoed in many of the day’s presentations that featured key note speakers, case studies, panel discussions and more. Bijo Chacko, MD, FHM, Hospitalist, provided inspirational welcome remarks and was followed by key note speaker Janice M. Beitz, PhD, RN, CS, CNOR, CWOCN, CRNP, MAPWCA who presented “Cruising the Evidence-Based Practice Highway in My Pink Cadillac: Evidence-Based Bedside Wound Care”. Other morning highlights included a diabetic foot ulcer panel discussion led by Jay Levine, DPM, Podiatry, Michael Schwartz, MD, Vascular Surgery, Ken Rowin, MD, Infectious Disease and Lourdes Braadt, RN, CDE, Diabetes Education and a case study entitled “A Leg Up on Venous Stasis Disease” presented by Stephen Hurst, MD, Vascular Surgery and Patty Sullivan, RN, Wound Care.
The action packed afternoon session began with a key note address by Byoung Yang, MD, System Medical Director, Wound and HBOT at Bon Secours Charity Health System entitled “Update in “HBOT: Why and How It Works” followed by “Revisiting Ostomy Care from Hospital to Home”, a presentation by Peter Kaye, MD, Colorectal Surgery and Debbie Siddi, RN, CWON, Home Care. The afternoon concluded with a pressure ulcer panel discussion moderated by William Goumas, MD, General Surgery, Laura Sudarsky, MD, Plastic Surgery, Fran Doellinger, RD, CDN, Nutrition, Heidi Grecco, RN, MSN-BC, Professional Development and Lise Crapella, RN, NP, WOCN, Wound.
Organogenesis, Inc. was the key note sponsor for the event. Other event sponsors included Hollister, Healthpoint, Soluble Solutions, Smith & Nephew, ACell, Ferris, Sage Products and Coloplast.
“The purpose of this program was to provide participants with knowledge of evidence-based practice utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to recognizing and treating chronic wounds. Based on the positive feedback I received from many of the attendees and sponsors, we certainly exceeded our goal and we look forward to planning next year’s event” said Dr. Yang.
